We used our beautiful Golden Gate Bridge as the topic to learn a new style of writing.  The children focused on three ‘claims’, each one backed up with two facts.  After adding a topic and closing sentence, we had an informative paragraph.

I used color to introduce the different parts.  Orange represented the claims, blue represented the facts, and black highlighted the topic and closing sentences.  I highlighted Lucy’s writing in color.  Claim, evidence, evidence!

Enjoy!

The Golden Gate Bridge – Lucy Peterson

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon to the world.  The Golden Gate Bridge made safety important.  It had a safety net in case someone fell off the bridge while working. People used face cream for the wind protection because there were strong winds.  The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge over the San Francisco Bay.  Joseph Strauss designed the Golden Gate Bridge.  Construction started in 1933 and finished four years later in 1937.  The Golden Gate Bridge is very large.  It is 746 feet high and 8,981 long.  It is 90 feet wide and 110,000 vehicles ride on it each day.  The Golden Gate Bridge was and is very beautiful.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Warren Miller

The Golden Gate Bridge was an icon in San Francisco. During construction safety was important. The people wore safety hats for protection. They wore face cream for wind protection. The color of the bridge was painted International Orange. At first they wanted to paint it black and yellow but then they made it international orange. They painted it orange because they wanted the boats to see it through the fog. Joseph Strauss design it. The start and finish dates were 1933 to 1937. Many men died when they were working on the bridge. It was very hard to do this. People said that Joseph Strauss couldn’t do it but he did and created a beautiful bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Niam

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon known all around the world. The engineers were worried about safety.  There were safety nets under the bridge while they were building just in case someone fell.  The net saved more than 10 lives.  The workers wore goggles to protect their eyes because the wind blew at 60 mph. The Golden Gate Bridge was really big it was 746 feet high. It is 90 feet wide and 8,981 feet long. The cable wraps three times around the earth. The Golden Gate Bridge is on Route 1 and 101 North. Today 110,000 vehicles cross the bridge per day. The towers have lights on top so at night boats don’t crash into the bridge. The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Lori Yacoubian

If someone draws the Golden Gate Bridge, you would know the icon in one second.  The safety during construction was good because, they protected themselves.  The wind was so strong, that they had to put thick cream on their face to protect them. It was the first time they wore construction hats. The size of the bridge is so big, it is taller than some buildings.  The bridge is 746 feet high and is 8,981 feet long. The cable size is 27,572 feet long it is so big it wraps 3 times around the Earth. Joseph Strauss designed that amazing bridge. People thought the bridge couldn’t be done.  They were going to paint the bridge yellow and black like a bumble bee, but instead they did International Orange.  They put lighting on top and under the bridge for the boats and cars to see.  The bridge is a popular tourist destination, because it is very pretty.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Willow Becker

The construction of the Golden Gate Bridge was a big event. The Golden Gate Bridge is an important icon today.  People love the bridge so much that it has become a popular tourist destination.  So many people drive over the Golden Gate Bridge per day.  Back then people did not wear safety gear but when they were building the bridge safety gear was a rule.  Under the bridge there was a safety net so if they fell they might stay alive. They also wore face cream that keeps their skin on because the wind speed can tear your skin off.  The Golden Gate Bridge is painted international orange. It is international orange so that you can see the bridge through the fog.  People say that the color is the same color as the Marin Hills.  You should see the Golden Gate Bridge it is really beautiful!

The Stunning Bridge - Devin

The Golden Gate Bridge was safely made, carefully designed, and it is still in use today.  When building the bridge workers were kept very safe.  The bridge was carefully designed.  The bridge is still in use today.  The Golden Gate Bridge is a very pretty icon.

The Stunning Bridge – Andrew

The Golden Gate Bridge - Kara Vilas

The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful icon.  The bridge is painted International Orange.  First they were going to paint it yellow and black like a bumble bee.  They decided to paint it orange to match the hills in Marin County.  While the people built there was a lot of safety.  There was a safety net that saved 11 people.  There also was thick face cream protection because the wind would rip off their skin.  The bridge was the largest bridge for 27 years.  The bridge is 746 feet from the water.  Also, it is 90 feet wide.  The Golden Gate Bridge reminds us that Americans can do anything.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Madisen

The Golden Gate Bridge is a nice place to go to.  The bridge design is a very beautiful design.  It is a suspension bridge.  Joseph Strauss designed the bridge.  Safety was important.  The bridge had a safety net under the bridge to protect the workers.  They also had to use face cream for wind protection.  The size is very long.  The cable size is one of the long things it is 27,572 feet of wire.  Another one is the bridge is 8,981 feet long.  In closing, the Golden Gate Bridge is a great place.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Ronin Tsai

The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful icon. The people had to wear special safety tools while working.  The people had to wear safety hats for the first time.  Also, they had to wear face cream for wind protection.  The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge that is over the San Francisco Bay.  Joseph Strauss was the person who designed the bridge.  They started building the bridge in 1933 and finished it 4 years later in 1937.  Today, the bridge is finished.  Since the bridge is finished today, it is Route 1 and 101 North.  It is also a popular tourist destination.  This icon, the Golden Gate Bridge, will always be remembered.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Charlotte Rothman

The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful icon that is known around the world.  The bridge design that was used is called a suspension bridge.  Joseph Strauss was the one who came up with the idea to make the bridge.  Some people say that he couldn’t build the bridge.  They started building the bridge on January 5, 1933.  They finished building the bridge on May 27, 1937.  This was the first time they recommend the builders to wear hard hats when making a bridge.  They also had safety nets under the Golden Gate Bridge when it was being built.  Today people like to come to the bridge.  The color of the bridge is painted International Orange.   Did you know that the paint helps the bridge not rust?  Today the Golden Gate Bridge is a popular tourist destination.  I would like to see this beautiful icon one day.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Ryan Ryu

The Golden Gate Bridge is a big icon to the world.  Even though the Golden Gate Bridge didn’t have technology in 1937 it does now.  The Golden Gate Bridge uses technology to control the lights on top for planes and on the bottom for boats.  It has solar power lights to save energy.  When Joseph Strauss and his workers were building it was not safe if you fell because the water was deep.  Since the water was deep they had to put safety nets below.  This is also the first time workers had to wear hardhats.  The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful man-made landmark.  The location makes traveling between the Marin County and San Francisco easy.  The bridge is painted International Orange people say it is the color of the Marin Mountains.  The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful icon in a great place.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Royce

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon in San Francisco.  There was a lot of safety during the build.  They had to wear safety hats during construction.  They also had face cream to protect their faces from the strong winds blowing through the bridge.  The bridge design was a suspension bridge design to let not only cars and trucks but also boats underneath the Golden Gate Bridge.  The Golden Gate Bridge is beautiful in California.  Joseph Strauss is the great person who designed the beautiful bridge.  The size is huge, giant, it’s the size of two houses.  It is very high, 746 feet high from the top of the water to the top of the bridge.  It is long.  It is 8,981 feet long.  Wow!  That’s long, very long.  In closing, I think we have the best bridge ever in California.

Golden Gate Bridge - Brooke

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon for all of San Francisco.  The location of the bridge over the San Francisco Bay.  The height of the bridge is 746 ft.  The bridge was designed by Joseph Strauss.  People said that he couldn’t build a bridge from San Francisco to Marin, but he proved them wrong!  Sadly several people died in the making of the bridge even with the safety net.  The bridge needed to be safe when they were working on it so they put a safety net.  The Golden Gate Bridge is a monument to remember.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Paolo

The Golden Gate Bridge is an impressive size.  The cable size of the Golden Gate Bridge could wrap around the earth 3 times.  The cable size is super big.  The cable is almost as big as the earth.  The height of the Golden Gate Bridge is 742 feet from the top of the water.  Did you know the bridge can flex?  The bridge goes over the Golden Gate Strait.  The length of the bridge is 8,981 feet long.  That was the longest bridge in the USA when it was built.  That is awesome.  The bridge cost $35,000,000.

The Golden Gate Bridge – Santiago

The Golden Gate Bridge is a beautiful bridge in San Francisco.  The Golden Gate Bridge was designed by Joseph Strauss. The design was a suspension bridge.  He started building it in 1933 and finished in 1937.  The Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge for 27 years.  The bridge is 700 ft. high.  The cables can wrap around the earth 3 times.  In 2016 the Golden Gate Bridge is Route 1 and 101 North.  There 110,000 cars drive on the bridge every day. It is a beautiful part of San Francisco.  I hope to visit the Golden Gate Bridge someday.

The Golden Gate Connecter - Will Salter

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon of the world.  Safety clothing was required for the first time on a large construction build. The safety net saved at least 11, if not more.  If it were not for the face cream worker’s skin might have been damaged because of the 60 MPH winds on top of the bridge.  The bridge was originally built to make a connection in between Marin County and San Francisco.   Initially it connected farmers with the big city.  Today the bridge has helped San Francisco turn into a bigger city.  The Golden Gate Bridge design was difficult to build.  This beautiful masterpiece is a suspension bridge.  One thing that shows it was difficult is that it took 4 years from 1933 – 1937 to complete!    I hope to see this masterpiece sometime in my life.

The Golden Gate Bridge - Carter Ehrhart

The Golden Gate Bridge is an icon known around the world.  This bridge is special because it has technology, it was safe to build and to use, and it is beautiful.  But the beauty is what makes it extra special.

The old and the new come together on the Golden Gate Bridge.  Even though today the bridge is high tech, it wasn’t when the bridge was finished in 1937.  Today there are fog horns, that weren’t there before. The lighting is also new and it is solar powered. There are many different lights on the bridge.  There are lights on the top of the bridge for low flying planes so they can see in the fog.  There are lights on the bottom of the bridge so ships and boats can see in the fog.  There are also sidewalk lights to help the people see through the fog.

The bridge had to add safety because the building of the bridge was so dangerous and because it was so big.  The bridge had to have many safety features that people didn’t require before. A respirator was a new thing that was required during the construction.  A safety net was also something that was required.  It was so windy there they needed wind protection.  One of the items they used was thick heavy face cream.  They also wore goggles so things didn’t fly in their face and eyes.

The bridge has many pretty features as well.  These features make it an icon.  It is in San Francisco which is a beautiful city.  A lot of people go there from all over the world, therefore it is an icon.  There were people who helped.  One of the people that helped was Joseph Strauss who was the chief engineer of the bridge.  The War Department had to reapprove it so they could build the bridge.

I have seen it and it is very pretty.  It will be an icon forever.

Our new math curriculum is called Everyday Math.  We are learning about the different components of the program.  On this day, the children learned how to go through the Student Reference Book.  We also learned a new game using the 100s chart.  Third grade math is awesome!

Today was day one of third grade!  We started off with looking at the 100s chart and sharing strategies on how to move around.  Some students counted by ones.  We then noticed that counting by 10s was faster and probably more accurate.  We also noticed that subtraction can be used to find the difference as well.  Here are a few volunteers sharing strategies.

It was so hot last week and I noticed that every morning the birdie water bowl was bone dry.  I’d fill it up, and the next morning, dry.  On Tuesday morning as I was getting the water for the birds, I saw a very confident kitty drinking the water.  Mystery solved!  You can imagine the birdies were NOT pleased that a cat was drinking their water AND sitting right under the bird feeder.  She took off running when I came outside, but I left food.  Wednesday morning Mr. Pruden saw her and gave her food.  We wanted to see if she belonged to anyone so off to the vet we went.

She had no microchip!  She needed a home and we had room.  Her name is Peaches.  She is tiny and skinny and LOVES to eat!  For the first 12 hours or so she slept with her head next to the food bowl.  Yesterday she ventured out a bit and left the kitchen.  Last night she slept on the sofa in our room.
